If you’re of retirement age, by now you’ve probably gone on so many trips in your life that it feels like you could prepare for a vacation in your sleep. Unfortunately, though, you never know what could happen and you want to make sure you are prepared for anything. Things are different now that you’re older, and it can be easy to overestimate your abilities. Here are 5 travel safety tips for seniors

5 Travel Safety Tips For Seniors

  1. Remember to always wear any braces or supports that have been given to you by your doctor. You know that old neck brace, or knee brace, or back brace that your doctor told you to wear from time to time? Well, when you’re on vacation you may feel like it’s embarrassing to walk around in public with it, but that’s when it’s most important. You will be traveling around on foreign terrain, and you never know when you are going to trip on a cobblestone or down a steep flight of stairs. That’s why it’s always best to just keep yourself protected and stable. Besides, you’ll never see any of those people again anyway.
  1. Be sure that you are fully stocked on all of your medications. Before you embark on your trip, you want to be sure that you have any and all medications that you take throughout the week. Depending on where you’re going, it may be difficult to find a pharmacy, and even if you do, they may not carry all of the same pharmaceuticals. So just add it to your packing list and don’t forget to check to make sure you have enough for your entire trip.
  1. Notify your bank that you are traveling. Whenever you are traveling, even if it’s only to a neighboring city, your bank is taking note of all of your spending. Banking systems assess your location as well as your spending habits. Of course, a lot of people spend their money differently when they’re on vacation, but if you don’t tell your bank, they may put a freeze on your card and leave you in the lurch. It’s all for the sake of protecting your account, but if your card gets frozen, your whole trip could turn into one major headache.
  1. Determine your mode of transport for all of the places you will be going. If you are traveling to Niagara Falls, you’ve probably already prepared by going online to find hotels in Niagra Falls, but have you looked into how you’re going to actually get up to those falls? Once you have put together your whole itinerary, you want to be sure you know whether you’re walking, taking a taxi, renting a car, or taking a chance on public transit. No matter what you choose to do, make sure you know how long you will be expecting yourself to walk, how steep the hills are, and don’t forget your best walking shoes.
  1. Don’t forget to take your cell phone with you at all times. If there’s one thing that you can’t afford to forget each day, it’s your phone. This is because you never know what might happen to you, from falling, to getting mugged, anything could happen, and you won’t have anybody around you to ask for help.
