7 Plastic Surgery Myths

Cosmetic surgery is common enough that you probably know one or more people who have had work done. Without undergoing the procedure yourself, there may be some misinformation on what plastic surgery is or other important details that you wouldn’t know about without experience. We’ve cleared up misconceptions for our clients before and here are some of the most common questions and concerns raised by the patients themselves or their family and friends.

Myth: Only Women go for Cosmetic Surgery

The portion of men that are undergoing elective cosmetic surgery is increasing and it’s one of the best kept secrets of celebrities. If you’re wondering why some of Hollywood’s leading men are able to keep their youthful looks, it’s all thanks to some very skillful surgeons in L.A.

 Myth: Plastic Surgery is unsafe

Cosmetic procedures are regulated by health and food safety boards in Canada and the United States. Furthermore, the surgeries have been performed very frequently that whatever procedure you choose, you won’t be the guinea pig. If you’re still in doubt, ask your doctor for referrals. The proof is in the pudding!

7 Plastic Surgery Myths

Myth: There is no difference between different Brands of Botox

Botox is a brand and there are other competing brands as well. Each company will use a different strain of botulinum toxin to manufacture their product. There can be different effects, duration, and reaction depending on the customer’s body.

Myth: A Plastic Surgeon is not a Doctor

Any certified surgeon must complete medical school and rotations, just like any other doctor. The American Board of Plastic Surgery takes 5 years of practicum to complete, which is more than other regulated professions, including lawyers and accountants! Furthermore, the surgeons have to answer to the board and they can lose their license if their performance doesn’t meet a certain standard.

 Myth: Surgery=Scarring

If you’ve ever visited someone in the hospital who has had medical surgery, chances are they will have a large scar as a result of the procedure. Doctors who operate on patients for medical reasons will not make minimizing scars a priority, whereas in plastic surgery, hiding the original suture is part of the job. Considering that people have facial surgery, it wouldn’t make sense that clients would choose to have a nose job if it meant a large, visible scar on their faces. There are ingenious ways to make scars less visible and less prominent, which plastic surgeons will know all about.

 Myth: Plastic Surgery is unaffordable

There is the idea that people who can’t afford plastic surgery in North America will head to countries where labour and medical supplies are less expensive because there’s less regulation to keep up with. This may have been true in the past, but with improvements in technology and skill, plastic surgery is no longer a luxury. There are a variety of procedures such as facelift, breast surgery, tummy tuck, etc. to choose from, depending on your need.

Myth: It’s only for People who are Vain

There are people who require cosmetic surgery to construct their faces or bodies that were damaged as a result of injury, illness, or birth defect. Everyone deserves to have the chance to be accepted for their looks and to live their lives with high self-esteem.

I am a plastic surgeon in Toronto and my private practice is largely dedicated to cosmetic surgical procedures such as breast reconstruction and tummy tuck. I feel that each surgery must be individualized to each person’s unique situation. As a plastic surgeon, I sincerely love making people feel more confident about themselves and their bodies. Although I am thoroughly passionate about my profession, in my past time I love to swim, bike, and dance, as well as spend a lot of quality time with my dog Linus!
