Your parents may be proud of you as they watch you walk at your college graduation, but if you really want to make them proud, then you’re going to need to find a job as quickly as possible. Some parents will be more verbal about it than others, but if they paid a lot of money for your education, then they are definitely looking out to see if you plan to give them a return on their investment. Not only that, but the longer it takes you to find a job after college, the more difficult it will be to find a good job. Here is how to increase your chances of landing a job after college.
Get a Good Internship
If there is a particular business or a type of business that you know you want to work for after college, then you should be applying for internships with that type of business while you’re still studying. This is the best way to get the job skills that you need for the job, while also getting your name and your face out there. If you decide to apply for a paying job upon graduation, you will definitely be first in line for employment.
Be a Professor’s Assistant
Working for one of your professors is another great way to increase your likelihood of getting a good job. You may have to do a ton of work, and your professor may often get paid and take credit for that work, but this is just the way it goes in academia. The benefit to putting in all of this hard work, though, is that you will have a much better chance of getting a good job once you graduate. You just want to make sure that you keep a positive rapport with your professor so that she or he will feel inclined to open all those doors for you in the end.
Keep Your Grades Up
It doesn’t matter if you have University of Cincinnati or Carnegie Mellon listed on your resume, if you didn’t earn impressive grades while you were in college, then you won’t be a compelling candidate for the more competitive jobs. Much like in high school, you may start to lose your energy and enthusiasm for all your classes as you reach the home stretch, but if you don’t push through it all until the very end, then you won’t look as appealing as your competitors.
Apply Early
The expression, “the early bird gets the worm” couldn’t apply more to the job search. Even if a company accepts your application, once they’ve received a certain amount, they are simply going to stop reading them. The key is to get yourself an interview before most people have even turned in their applications.
Put Together a Strong Portfolio
Creativity and innovation are key to getting any kind of job. That’s why you want to take all the work you’ve done in college and put it together in some kind of portfolio that you can present when you go on job interviews. There needs to be a very visual way to experience the work that you’ve done and the unique vision that you bring to the table.
